Field notes consist primarily of species accounts and are separated in sections: Birds, Mammals, Amphibians, and Plants with Birds making up 156 of the 180 pages. Data within each section is organized by species name. Collecting events and observations take place primarily in Northern and Central California. A number of observations are made on the University of California, Berkeley campus and Strawberry Canyon, Berkeley. Mayhew also makes numerous observations from Conaway Ranch in Woodland, California.
