Las Vegas.... Measurement of Water Mr. J. P. Mack, Los Angeles On the above date, Mr. G. Hardman, of the Nevada State Water Department, and myself measured the flow of water from the springs and well west of Las Vegas and the following report is for your records: WELL. 0.22 over 2 feet rect. weir --0.677 second feet -- 27.08 miners inches coming up on outside of casing and flowing down Las Vegas Creek to ranch east of town. 2.993 second feet--119.72 miners inches flowing into settling basin and being used for domestic and operating purposes. Total flow of well 0.43 over 4 feet rect. weir--3.67 second feet--146.8 miners inches. BIG SPRING. 0.33 over 3 feet rect.weir--1.86 second feet -- 74.4 miners inches flowing into settling basin and being used for domestic and operating purposes. MIDDLE SPRING: 0.84 second feet -- 33.60 miners inches flowing down Las Vegas Creek to ranch east of town. LITTLE SPRING: 0.45 over 1.5 feet rect. weir--1.44 second feet -57.6 miners inches flowing down Las Vegas Creek to ranch east of town. MEASUREMENT OF MIDDLE SPRING AND LITTLE SPRING TOGETHER: 0.38 over 3 foot rect. weir --2.28 second feet--91.2 miners inches. NOTE: The well shows a decrease of 20.4 miners inches or 228.9 gallons per minute since March 3, 1927. There is also a noticeable difference in the Big Spring. The measurement on March 3, 1927 was made in forebay with interpolated corrections and with natural fluctuation of spring the difference is possible. At present there is very little water going over the spillway in the afternoon and it appears that there may be a shortage of water during the summer months. We are now making a survey for pipe line from little spring and as the well is decreasing in flow it might be well to secure the additional water which amounts to 646 gallons per minute. As near as I can determine this additional water will be the capacity of the 16" pipe. Inspection of well in shop ground by Mr. McGrath and myself shows that the well is sanded up until it will not flow over water softener and present arrangement of air pipes in this well has not been a success, for when the air is turned into the well, the well throws sand.
