Abstract

The Elizabeth and Charles Pratt Personal Papers consist of correspondence, travel information, and photographs from the Pratt family dating from 1895 to 1953. The majority of correspondence in the collection is between Charles Pratt and his wife, Alice Elizabeth Margaret "Diane" Pratt. The collection also contains correspondence between Elizabeth Pratt's parents and her literary journals from her time attending Swarthmore College, in Swarthmore, Pennsylvania.

Biographical / Historical Note

Charles Russell Pratt (1898-?) was a Lieutenant Commander in the United States Navy. He travelled and resided in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Pennsylvania; and New York City, New York. Pratt was transferred from USS Rathburne to Rio de Janeiro in July 1936. He was a lieutenant commander aiding Brazil in 1936, and joined the U.S. Naval Mission to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 1938. He went on to join the USS Wichita, going again to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Montevideo, Uruguay in 1939 and Guantanamo and Puerto Rico in 1941. He later resided in Birmingham, England with his wife Elizabeth Pratt around 1953.

Alice Elizabeth Margaret Follwell (1906-?) was born in West Ealing, London, England and immigrated to the United States in 1912. Elizabeth lived in Maplewood, New Jersey until 1924, when she moved to Swarthmore, Pennsylvania to attend Swarthmore College. Elizabeth used the name "Diane E. Follwell" during her attendance at Swarthmore College. She lived between New York and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil from 1929 to 1939.
