Biographical / Historical Note

The Nevada EPSCoR Women in Science and Engineering (WISE) organization was created in 1993 through a grant from Nevada EPSCoR. In 1977, the National Science Board created the Established Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (EPSCoR) as a way to help some states become more competitive for research grants. Nevada became one of the earliest EPSCoR jurisdictions in the program, joining the organization in 1985. In 1993, WISE was created under a Nevada EPSCoR grant. Three institutions took part in the program: the University of Nevada, Las Vegas; the University of Nevada, Reno; and the Desert Research Institute. The purpose of the program was to provide funding to female scientists and engineers engaging in Master's and Doctoral level research. The program also provided graduate assistant positions and mentoring for graduate and undergraduate students in science and engineering majors. The program's coordinator was Ellen Jacobson of the University of Nevada, Reno. Dr. Amy Penny of the University of Nevada, Las Vegas assisted. Although the WISE program was discontinued in 1998, EPSCoR has provided over $41 million in funding for colleges and universities that are part of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) since 1985.
