Abstract

The Tamara Pickett Papers (1977-1998) are comprised of materials related to the experiences of transgendered individuals in America. The collection includes transgender publications, scientific articles about sex reassignment surgery, and informational material provided to Pickett from various doctors as she planned her own sexual reassignment surgery.

Scope and Contents Note

The Tamara Pickett Papers focus on Tamara Pickett's personal transition from male to female and the transgender community in which she participated. The collection features personal documents including information about sexual reassignment surgeries from various doctors from 1996, personal correspondence, and her advancement to a second-degree Reiki healer in 1998. Other materials include medical articles about sex reassignment surgery, transgender publications including Transition and Metamorphosis, an outline of a presentation to University of Nevada, Las Vegas students about transgender people, and a copy of Harry Benjamin's The Transsexual Phenomenon from 1977.

Biographical / Historical Note

Tamara Pickett was born Terry Lee Pickett. As a male, he served as a soldier in the United States Army. Terry finished her transition to Tamara with sexual reassignment surgery in 1996. As Tamara, she is known for her activism in Las Vegas, Nevada, especially her successful campaign for better health care provided by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for transgender veterans. She was also involved with the Nevada Gender League and The Turnabouts, a transgender support group in Las Vegas.
