Biographical / Historical Note

The El Portal was the first motel built in Beatty, NV, built in the late 1930s by Jim Staley. The El Portal was built on the west end of Beatty on the road to Daylight Pass which led to Death Valley in California. The motel was originally built as a motor lodge with rooms and adjoining garages. By 1947 the El Portal had been renamed as the Bullfrog Motel and in 1948 the Bates family purchased the motel and restored the original El Portal name.
