Biographical / Historical Note

Michael Gaughan opened the Barbary Coast Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada, on March 2, 1979. The property was located next to the Flamingo, sharing a corner of the Las Vegas Strip with the original MGM Grand, the Dunes, and Caesars Palace. The Barbary Coast cost $11.5 million to open, and ownership changed over its 28 years of operation from Gaughan's Coast Casinos Inc., then to Boyd Gaming, and finally to Harrah's Entertainment. On February 27, 2007, the Barbary Coast closed and reopened a few days later on March 2. It was renamed Bill's Gamblin' Hall and Saloon after Bill Harrah. Caesars Entertainment, formally Harrah's Entertainment, closed Bill's on February 4, 2013, after six years of continuous operation. After a complete renovation of the property it reopened as a luxury boutique hotel named The Cromwell on April 21, 2014, to invited guests, with hotel rooms becoming available on May 21, 2014.
