Abstract

The Southern Nevada Neon Survey Records (2002-2003, 2016-2018) are comprised of digital photographs and survey forms documenting neon signs in Las Vegas, Nevada. The records represent work done for the Neon Survey, which was a collaborative project conducted by the Neon Museum and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas University Libraries Special Collections and Archives. The survey forms document information on each sign such as the name and address associated with the signs, physical condition, artistic significance, and general history. The collection represents the efforts of two cultural heritage organizations in Las Vegas to document and preserve the artistic and historical significance of Nevada's neon heritage.

Biographical / Historical Note

The Neon Survey was a collaboration between UNLV University Libraries Special Collections and Archives and the Neon Museum to photograph and collect information about neon signs in Las Vegas, Nevada. The survey was designed to capture the artistic and historical significance of the neon art form. The first phase of the project was undertaken in 2002 and the second phase took place from 2016 to 2018. The 2002 survey includes survey forms and photographs that were created by David G. Schwartz and Josh Cannaday that were published online. The survey forms from the 2016 to 2018 survey were conducted by the Neon Museum and the digital photographs were created by Aaron Mayes and student interns. The project was significant in documenting and preserving Nevada's neon heritage.

Acquisition Note

Materials were formally transferred to University of Nevada, Las Vegas Special Collections and Archives in 2017 and 2018; accession numbers 2017-148, 2018-017, and 2018-018.

Processing Note

In 2019, Tammi Kim transferred digital files from Google Drive and a networked drive to accession the collection. A virus scan was conducted and checksums and metadata manifest were created during accessioning. Descriptive summaries of the collection files were created during accessioning and a finding aid was created in ArchivesSpace. No further work has been performed on the materials.
