The Nevada Empowered Women's Project (NEW Project) Records (1996-2001) consists of brochures, newsclippings, federal and state agency reports, and manuals about poverty and welfare rights pertaining to the activism of the NEW Project, headquartered in Reno, Nevada. The material chronicles the battles over welfare reform in the 1990s and also includes the full agenda and report for the 1999 Welfare Reform Conference held in Washington, D.C.

Biographical / Historical Note
The Nevada Empowered Women's Project (NEW Project) was formed in 1997 as part of the Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada (PLAN) in Reno, Nevada. NEW Project was created to organize women around issues of social and economic justice. The organization was founded with a multicultural emphasis and targeted issues that were of great concern for low-income women of color. In addition to providing organizational training and knowledge of welfare rights, The NEW Project assisted women and children with childcare, child support, affordable housing, healthcare, and emotional self-esteem programs aimed at combating negative public perceptions of low-income women. The NEW Project played a vocal role in the battles over welfare reform in the mid and late 1990s.

Material was processed by UNLV Special Collections staff in 2006. In 2014, as part of a legacy finding aid conversion project, Ian M. Baldwin revised and enhanced the collection description to bring it into compliance with current professional standards then entered the data into ArchivesSpace. In 2015 Joyce Moore added a new accession, revised the finding aid, and entered the revisions into ArchivesSpace.
