Abstract

The collection is comprised of various account and appointment books dating from approximately 1922 to 1972 kept by Las Vegas, Nevadan dentist, Dr. Jay Dayton "J. D." Smith, who operated a dental practice near 1st and Fremont streets. Also included in this collection are sympathy cards to Dr. Smith's family upon his passing, copies of his obituary from the Las Vegas Sun, copies of the Las Vegas Age with a front page article on Dr. Smith's appointment as U.S. Marshal, and a copy of the book K.O. Knudson: His Life by James Monroe Harvey.

Scope and Contents Note

The J. D. Smith Papers date from approximately 1922 to 1972 and contain various appointment books and daybooks used by Dr. Smith in running his dental practice at 1st and Fremont streets in Las Vegas, Nevada. The collection includes copies of a February 26, 1937 issue of the Las Vegas Age with a cover story on Dr. Smith's appointment as United States Marshal. The collection also includes copies of Dr. Smith's obituary upon his death in 1984; sympathy cards to his family; and a copy K.O. Knudson: His Life by James Monroe Harvey that was presented to Leslie Smith, son of Dr. J. D. Smith.

Biographical / Historical Note

Dr. Jay Dayton Smith, commonly known as "J. D.," was born in Monona, Iowa on March 22, 1895. He graduated from the University Minnesota College of Dentisty in 1922 and had his first practice in a mining region of Minnesota. In 1927 Dr. Smith moved to Las Vegas, where he operated a dental practice located at 1st and Fremont streets for over four decades until his retirement. Dr. Smith was actively involved with several community organizations including the American Legion; the Clark County Democratic Central Committee, where he was twice elected chairman; and the Elks Lodge. Dr. Smith served on the Clark County School District Board of Education from 1935 to 1953. In 1964, he had the distinction of having the first junior high school in North Las Vegas, J. D. Smith Junior High, named after him. Dr. Smith was also a member of the Nevada State Board of Medical Examiners and was the first Las Vegas dentist to be appointed to that body. Dr. J. D. Smith passed away in 1984 at age of 89.

This collection was minimally processed by Tammi Kim in 2016 at the time of accessioning. The materials were quickly reviewed to provide a general description of the contents of each box and an estimate of dates represented in the material. Loose papers were foldered. No further work has been performed on the materials.
