Fallman Family Papers (MS-00908)

Abstract

The Fallman Family Papers (approximately 1950-2005) consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographic prints and slides, scrapbooks, and pamphlets from James and Ima Fallman and their daughter, Janice. The correspondence primarily relates to James and Ima Fallman and chronicles Ima's involvement with the Francisco Garces chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), James's work as a bartender in Las Vegas, Nevada, and awards he received during World War II. The newspaper clippings mention either James Fallman or his daughter, Janice, and her involvement with the Las Vegas High School Rhythmettes dance team. The majority of materials from Janice describe her school days at Las Vegas High School and events participated in as a child and young adult.

The Fallman Family Papers (approximately 1950-2005) consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, photographic prints and slides, scrapbooks, and pamphlets from James and Ima Fallman and their daughter Janice. The correspondence primarily relates to James and Ima Fallman, detailing Ima's involvement with the Francisco Garces chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), James's work as a bartender in Las Vegas, Nevada, and awards he received during World War II. The newspaper clippings mention either James Fallman or his daughter, Janice, and her involvement with the Las Vegas High School Rhythmettes dance team. The majority of the materials relating to Janice covers her school days at Las Vegas High School and events she participated in as a child and young adult including the Camp Fire Girls and the Children of the American Revolution. The collection includes two scrapbooks, one from James Fallman and one from Janice Fallman. James's scrapbook contains travel ephemera, postcards, and menus from Las Vegas locations. Janice's scrapbook contains photographs, newspaper clippings, and correspondence relating to her time as a Rhythmette. The photographs and slides contain images of Fallman family members, vacations, and Rhythmette performances. The collection also includes a jewelry box owned by Janice Fallman that contains buttons, pins, and jewelry, as well as ephemera from James Fallman's work as a bartender at the Mint, materials from Ima and Janice Fallman's involvement with the DAR, and items from Janice's time as a student at the University of Las Vegas, Nevada (UNLV). The Fallman Family Papers provide insight into the activities and jobs men, women, and children partook in while living in Las Vegas during the 1950s and 1960s.

Biographical / Historical Note

James Mitchell Fallman (1923-2002) was born in Lexington, Missouri to Mildred and Mitchell Fallman. He graduated from Lexington High School and then attended Wentworth Military Academy, both located in Missouri. Fallman enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1943 after marrying Ima Louise Allen on November 13, 1943. James and Ima Fallman were parents to James Mitchell Fallman, Jr. (1944-), Janice Marie Fallman (1947-), and Jacqueline Louise Fallman (1961-).

During World War II, Fallman earned the rank of Private First Class and saw duty as part of the 137th Infantry, 35th Division, Company B. On July 17, 1944, Fallman was wounded at St. Lo, France, for which he received a Purple Heart medal. He also received the Combat Infantry badge, Bronze Star, Good Conduct medal, and American Campaign and European Theater ribbons. The French government awarded him the Victory Medal. After his injury, Fallman worked as a military policeman at a military hospital in Springfield, Missouri until being honorably discharged in 1945.

After leaving the Army, James Fallman attended Central Missouri State University and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration. Fallman managed his parents' bar, the Palace Hotel Bar, in Lexington, Missouri. After moving to Las Vegas in 1954, Fallman worked as a bartender at various establishments including the Boulder Club, the Fremont Hotel, the Mint, the Showboat, the Black Magic Club, and the Jungle Club. After his career as a bartender, Fallman worked as an insurance agent and retired in 1985. He passed away on October 4, 2002.

Ima Allen (1925-1999) was born in Richmond, Missouri on December 13, 1925 to Thomas and Bessie King Allen. She graduated from high school in 1943 and worked temporarily in the local draft office until she married James Mitchell Fallman, Sr. on November 13, 1943. Ima Fallman became an Avon representative after her two eldest children began college in the 1960s. Ima Fallman was the recipient of the Avon President’s Club award for 15 years. She also actively participated in the Francisco Garces chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and held both Historian and Regent offices. She passed away in 1999.

Janice Fallman (1947-) was born to Ima and James Fallman on November 3, 1947 in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1954, Fallman moved with her family to Las Vegas, Nevada. She attended Las Vegas High School where she participated in the Rhythmette dance team. In 1970, she graduated from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas with a degree in Spanish. In 1981, Janice earned a Juris Doctorate from the McGeorge School of Law at the University of the Pacific in Sacramento, California. She worked for many different organizations including the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and as a lawyer in both Nevada and California.

Materials were processed in 2019 by Maggie Bukowski. Items were rehoused, arranged, and photographs sleeved. Maggie Bukowski wrote the finding aid and entered the data into ArchivesSpace. In 2020, Tammi Kim minimally processed the 2019-103 accession and updated the finding aid.
