Research collections of the National Museum of Natural History are available to the public for the following ten museum collection units:
- Department of Anthropology (497,605 records)
- Department of Botany (4,560,955 records)
- Department of Entomology (727,524 records)
- Department of Invertebrate Zoology (1,991,663 records)
- Department of Mineral Sciences (463,823 records)
- Department of Paleobiology (725,338 records)
- Department of Vertebrate Zoology:
- Division of Amphibians & Reptiles (612,617 records)
- Division of Birds (592,884 records)
- Division of Fishes (499,270 records)
- Division of Mammals (625,995 records)
A total of 11,304,230 specimen records are currently available from this facility. Of these, approximately 292,000 represent all of the museum's available extant biological primary type specimen records. Approximately 139,000 are paleobiological type specimen records and 560 are mineral type specimen records. About 1.5 million of these specimen records are georeferenced.
