This Texas Instruments 800 x 800 pixel CCD was one of many flight spares for the first Wide Field Planetary Camera launched on the Hubble Space Telescope on April 24, 1990. Also called variously the “Wide Field and Planetary Camera 1” this was the first camera launched on the Hubble, and though it worked to specification, it’s effectiveness was degraded because Hubble’s main mirror was flawed.

The camera utilized four identical TI CCDs to achieve wide-field coverage of 2.6 x 2.6 arc minutes working at f/12.9 and resolutions as high as 0.043 arcseconds, the effective limit of the pixel size in Planetary mode, in the wavelength range 115 nanometers (far ultraviolet) to 1000 nm (near infra-red). It is not known if this sample was coated with coronene, a fluorescence hydrocarbon material that extended the CCD’s sensitivity into the ultraviolet.

This particular sample was provided by Dr. Edward Cheng, former NASA Hubble Space Telescope Development Project Scientist at the Goddard Space Flight Center in 2015.
