The Japanese used devices such as this one to make scientific measurements during balloon ascensions. The clear plastic protective box housing the electronic and mechanical equipment allowed for the rays of the sun to heat the interior of the device (like a greenhouse) which included a small battery. These types of devices were mounted on the top exterior of Japanese balloons and integrated into the working elements of the balloon's payload.
