This name tag was a spare of the type worn on an astronaut's flight suits and flight jackets. Kathryn (Kathy) Thornton flew on the Space Shuttle as a mission specialist in 1989 (STS-33), 1992 (STS-49), 1993 (STS-63), and 1995 (STS-73). She performed spacewalks on two missions, including the STS-63 servicing mission to the Hubble Space Telescope.

NASA transferred a number of spare astronaut name tags to the Museum over the years, this one coming in 1996.
