Presented to Kiffin Rockwell of the Lafayette Escadrille. The Verdun Medal was established on November 20, 1916 and issued to the soldiers and airmen who participated in the Battle for Verdun, from February to November 1916. There were six variations of the Verdun Medal and were considered to be "unofficial" awards. Therefore they were not worn on the military uniform in parade-dress.

American citizen Kiffin Rockwell volunteered to fly with the French Air Service during World War I prior to the United States' entry into the conflict. Rockwell was the first American pilot to shoot down an enemy aircraft in World War I. He was killed in action in September 1916, the second American airman to die in combat in France.
