This gold medal was part of the Fifth Annual Founders Medal award given to Dr. Charles Stark Draper by the National Academy of Engineering in 1970. The award was established in 1965 to honor outstanding contributions by an engineer both to the profession and to society. Dr. Draper received the award for "his pioneering achievements in engineering, including the development of inertial guidance systems." Dr. Draper donated a collection of his awards, including this medal, to the National Collection in 1974.
