This 15 cm diameter R-Ss Gs solid-fuel rocket, with associated transport and launching crate, was used by German anti-aircraft defenses to launch false target marking flares to throw off the aim of British Royal Air Force bomber forces. It may also have been used to disperse Britsh target marking flares, to launch German signal flares and as a propaganda leaflet rocket. It has a large empty cardboard container taking up about half the length of the rocket.

The National Air and Space Museum received this rocket from the U.S. Army Ordnance Museum in Aberdeen, Maryland, in 1989 as a part of transfer of German rocket and missile items.
