This item is part of a test equipment kit from the backup Skylab Orbital Workshop displayed in the Museum. Skylab was launched into low Earth orbit in May 1973 and occupied until February 1974 by three-man crews on three different missions. Several onboard tool kits contained a variety of tools and supplies for basic repairs and maintenance tasks that the astronauts might need to do while in space.
A three-drawer container of testing equipment, made by McDonnell Douglas, was transferred to the Smithsonian with the backup Skylab Orbital Workshop in December 1975.
