This medal was authorized on July 9, 1918 for exceptional meritorious service to the United States in duty of great responsibility with the U.S. Army. Each of the world fliers received this medal by act of Congress in February 1925.

Smith 1919 - 1924" embossed in gold in the center; brass colored latch; interior of lid is lined with cream colored satin and has "Tiffany & Co. New York Paris London" printed in gold in center; bottom of interior is lined with cream colored velvet
