This challenge coin marked the giver as a veteran of the United States Navy. Challenge coins such as this one are issued by military units, organizations, agencies, and companies and given to members, employees, supporters, and VIP guests. This challenge coin belonged to NASA astronaut Kathryn D. Sullivan, who joined NASA as an astronaut candidate in the 1978 class, the first group to include women, and became the first American woman to walk in space. Sullivan joined the US Naval Reserve in 1988, retiring in 2006 with the rank of Captain.
Dr. Sullivan gifted this challenge coin to the Museum in 2019.
