The Hall-Scott Motor Car Company, with general offices in San Francisco and factories at Berkeley, California, opened its doors in 1910, and first built powered rail cars, as well as airplane engines. A few automobiles also used Hall-Scott engines. Elbert Hall was a principal designer of the famous Liberty engine, which were mass produced for WWI. Hall-Scott ended its aviation business in the mid-1920s, turning to the growing demand for engines in various land and marine applications. In 1958, Ohio-based Hercules, another engine maker, purchased the rights to make Hall-Scott engines, which continued to be manufactured until around 1970.

This walnut propeller was built by Hall-Scott for use with its A-7-A engine, which primarily powered the WWI Standard Aero Corporation Standard J aircraft, as well as other Standard, Aero Marine, and Dayton-Wright aircraft. Despite vibration common to four-cylinder engines at the time, the A-7-A was otherwise regarded by experts as a rugged and dependable motor.
