This badge denotes Senior Airman in the United States Air Force. A young man of this rank served in the honor guard at Barksdale Air Force Base, Louisiana, in February 2003. To him and others in the honor guard fell the duty of handling flags and caskets bearing remains of the seven astronauts who perished when the Space Shuttle Columbia disintegrated during reentry on February 1, 2003. Barksdale AFB served as the collection site for vehicle debris and human remains after the accident. The Senior Airman sent some of his honor guard accessories to the Museum as a tribute to the STS-107 Shuttle mission crew.
