Collected between 1877 and 1881 by Edward W. Nelson (1855-1934, a naturalist with the US Army Signal Corps on board the "Corwin" and assigned to collect natural and cultural specimens for the U.S. National Museum); purchased by the U.S. National Museum (precursor to the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History) in 1897; acquired by George Heye through an exchange with the US National Museum in 1908.
