Collected in 1841 by members of the United States Exploring Expedition, led by US Navy Lieutenant Charles Wilkes (1798-1877); acquired by the US National Museum (precursor to the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History) in 1858; acquired by George Heye through an exchange with the US National Museum in 1908.
