Said to have been owned by a member of Sitting Bull's band; collected from the owner in 1890 by General William Passmore Carlin (1829-1903, Civil War veteran and commander at Fort Yates, North Dakota); inherited by General Carlin's son William Edward Carlin (1866-1928); transferred by William Edward Carlin to his friend Herbert W. Brown (1866-1935, a businessman in Cascade, Montana, who may have met Carlin between 1901 and 1903 while working for the Chicago & Northwestern Railway); lent to MAI by Herbert Brown in 1923; purchased by MAI from Herbert Brown in 1932 with funds donated by Robert P. Irving.
