Collected in 1868 or 1869 during an exploration and survey of the Colorado River led by Major John Wesley W. Powell (1834-1902, later head of the US Geological Survey and the Smithsonian's Bureau of Ethnology); formerly in the collection of Mitchell Work (1913-1976, an antiques and arts dealer in Nutley, New Jersey); purchased by MAI from Mitchell Work in 1967.
