Said to have been owned by Kill Eagle (Wanbli Kte, Sihasapa Lakota, ca. 1827-1885) and surrendered to Captain Andrew S. Bennett (1834-1878) after the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876; subsequently owned by a Mr. Gilmore of Rochester, New York; acquired by David Smithson Stewart (1925-2011) from Mr. Gilmore in the mid 1930s; donated to NMAI by David S. Stewart in 1993.
