Collection History
Owned and used by Ishi (Yahi, ca. 1860-1916) during his time at the University of California Museum of Anthropology in San Francisco (1911-1916); probably collected from him in 1915 or 1916 by Joseph Kossuth Dixon (1856-1926, a photographer and filmmaker) and possibly during Dixon's work on the "Wanamaker Expedition of Citizenship," which was sponsored by Rodman Wanamaker (1863-1928, of the Wanamaker department stores) to present American flags to 189 tribes and emphasize the importance of Native citizenship; purchased by MAI from Joseph Dixon's widow, Edith R. Dixon (1891-1969), in 1927.
