Collected between 1871 and 1874 during an exploration and survey of the Colorado River by Major John Wesley W. Powell (1834-1902, later head of the US Geological Survey and the Smithsonian's Bureau of Ethnology); acquired by the US National Museum (later the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History) in 1874; acquired by George Heye through an exchange with the US National Museum in 1908.
