Formerly owned by Smutty Bear (Ma-ta-sa-be-zi-a, Ihanktonwan Nakota, ca. 1790-1865 and said to have been given by him to Major Jonathan Leet Bean (1800-1853, Indian agent for the Upper Missouri); formerly in the collection of Indian art collector David T. Vernon (1900-1973); acquired by MAI in 1967, possibly through an exchange with the Jackson Hole Preserve, Inc. (a foundation backed by the Rockefeller family), which purchased Vernon's entire collection in 1965.
