Collected in 1900 by anthropologist Stewart Culin (1858-1929) during the John Wanamaker Expedition, which was led by Culin and sponsored by the Free Museum of Art and Science (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) and Philadelphia businessman John Wanamaker (1838-1922); part of the collection of the Free Museum of Science and Art until 1908 when it was acquired by George Heye through an exchange with the Free Museum of Science and Art.
