Samuel A. Lichtmann came to Chicago in 1921 after receiving a degree in architecture from the University of Illinois. He worked as an architect and designer for Holabird & Root before forming a partnership with Ira J. Bach in the 1930s. Lichtmann also worked as a surveyor and consultant to the Federal Public Housing Commission during this period. Establishing his own firm in 1948, Lichtmann oversaw the renovation of many of the city's landmarks and older buildings, including some on the University of Chicago campus. Samuel A. Lichtmann was a fellow of the American Institute of Architects and he held the presidency of the Chicago chapter from 1955 to 1957. He served as vice chairman of the Commission on Chicago Architectural Landmarks from 1957 to 1968 when a newly reconstituted Commission on Chicago Historical and Architectural Landmarks was established. Lichtmann chaired the newly organized commission from 1968 until his death in 1977 at the age of 79.
The Samuel Lichtmann Architectural Collection consists entirely of soft bound architectural specifications for a variety of buildings and structures in Chicago including such projects as ventilation work at Wicker Park Elementary School and a temporary housing project for military veterans of World War II. Each folder consists of a single bound item.
