The German Aid Society, Deutsche Gesellschaft von Chicago, was established in 1854 to assist German-speaking immigrants in Chicago. The society was financed through private contributions in the form of membership fees and through larger donations from German industrialists. It provided small sums of money, clothing, and health care expenses to German-speakers in need. It also operated a small employment office.
The collection consists of correspondence, minutes, financial records, case histories, policy statements, and annual reports. The records are primarily in German. The materials pertain to the economic conditions of recent German immigrants, patriotic German organizations, immigration regulations, and other American German Aid Societies.
