Show moreThe National Scientific Balloon Facility (NSBF) Annual Report FY 1982 includes information on flight services by the NSBF, electronics improvements, operations improvements, research and development, long duration, operational support, failures, miscellaneous projects, personnel, funding, panel meetings, base improvements, and plans for FY 1983. During FY 1982, the NSBF conducted 59 flights in support of 49 scientists representing 31 research organizations. Fourteen flights were flown from Alice Springs, Australia, Thompson, Canada, Malden, Missouri, and Greenville, South Carolina. The flight success rate was 81%. Highlights of the year included the successful valving of a balloon from 130K to 60K at a rate of more than 1000ft/min., development of automatic burst control, International Intercomparison Program, and the successful operation of payload reel down system. The first meeting of the Long Duration Ballooning Study Group was help in Palestine and a meeting of the International Committee on Ballooning and Related Technology (ICOBART) was held in Ottawa, Canada.
