Measuring snowfall is a challenge for weather researchers, but such data is extremely important for emergency managers as well as those in charge of air and surface transportation. The main playing field where snow sensors vie for accuracy under NCAR's watch is the Marshall Field Site, located a few kilometers south of Boulder on a windswept mesa. Along with the S-Pol Doppler radar, the site hosts an array of more than a dozen automated gauges provided by various manufacturers. The gauges each gather snowfall and measure its liquid water equivalent (the amount of melted water it contains). Here NCAR's Scott Landolt works with one of the snow gauges at the Marshall site.
