Show moreThe NCAR Scientific Balloon Facility (NSBF) Annual Report 1968 includes information on facilities, balloon design and dynamics, ballooning systems and techniques, electronic support systems, flight services at NCAR fixed facilities, personnel, funding, panel meetings, balloon industry-NCAR meeting, Scientific Ballooning Standards Committee (ad hoc), and plans for 1969. A total of 74 flights were flown from Palestine, Texas, and Page, Arizona with a 81% success rate. Several NCAR operational records were established: a gross load of 6,729lbs was successfully launched and a flight time of 42 hours was achieved. As a result of the balloon industry-NCAR meetings, a Committee on Scientific Ballooning Standards (ad hoc) was created with the charge to adopted uniform terminology and nomenclature for scientific ballooning and toward safety and balloon packaging standards. Justin H. Smalley of NCAR was elected chairman of the committee. Show less
