When a cumulus cloud becomes vertically developed and dense enough to produce lightning, it is termed a cumulonimbus, or thunderstorm, cloud. The bulging, puffy, cauliflower shapes and the well-developed anvil (upper left) indicate that this cloud has reached maturity.
