A farmer works alongside the National Center for Atmospheric Research's CP-4 Doppler radar (CP stands for cloud physics) stationed at Waipu Beach, Taiwan, during the Taiwan Area Mesoscale Experiment (TAMEX). In 1987, scientists from the United States and the Republic of China (Taiwan) cooperated on this two-month field project, aimed at improving understanding of the thunderstorm systems over mountainous terrain that trigger heavy rains.
