This image shows the original fountain at the Mesa Lab, designed by I.M. Pei. The architect had designed a third tower for the lab, which would have been framed by the passageway beyond the fountain, but that tower was never built and the passageway became something of wind tunnel. Unfortunate visitors to the fountain plaza were frequently soaked by the wind-blown sprays of water. As a result, the jets were often turned off. In 2002 the fountain was replaced by one with more modest jets that rose slightly above its concrete base (See DI01006). By 2009 this fountain was not working and it was decided to redesign the area to make it more functional and easier to maintain.
