On October 29, 2010 the Dome Fire broke out near the Dome Rock formation in Boulder Canyon just outside of Boulder, Colorado. The fire quickly spread north, cresting the ridge between Boulder and Sunshine canyons in a matter of hours. In this image smoke from the fire billows above the city's western foothills. The pale outline of the moon can be seen in the upper left. More than 1,800 people were forced to evacuate, but no homes were damaged. The 84-acre fire was fully contained by the following Monday.
