Show moreThis April 1976 report summarizes the National Hail Research Experiment so far. It begins by describing the three approaches taken by the project (research on the mechanisms of hail development and the effects of seeding, studies to detect the effects of seeding and a randomized seeding experiment, and economic, social, legal, and environmental studies associated with precipitation modification). The project's highlights are explained, and include the firm rejection of the original Soviet hail seeding model (at least as pertaining to the northeast Colorado storms), the discovery of the dominant ice crystal-rimming hail formation process, confirmation of at least two different types of hail storms, and new proposals for hail seeding models based on those discoveries. Plans for intensive analysis during the 1976 field experiment are put forth. Show less
