TRACON (Terminal Radar Approach Control) units are installed at airports and help track and direct airplane traffic. The National Center for Atmospheric Research 's Terminal Doppler Weather Radar (TDWR) program helps detect microbursts, downdrafts of cold, heavy air that strike the ground and spread horizontally, producing strong wind shear. TDWR readings are displayed in real time through TRACON.
