The National Center for Atmospheric Research's research aircraft are stationed at the Jefferson County Airport, about 12 miles southeast of NCAR headquarters, in Boulder, Colorado. The aircraft (owned by the National Science Foundation and operated by NCAR) are used for atmospheric studies conducted around the world by NCAR and its member institutions. Nearly 100 feet (30 meters) long with a 132-foot (30-meter) wingspan, the C-130 carries a variety of instruments providing measurements important to atmospheric chemistry, dynamics, radiation, cloud physics and oceanography.
