The Monsoon Experiment (MONEX) was a part of the Global Atmospheric Research Program (GARP) and coincided with the First GARP Global Experiment (FGGE) in 1979. MONEX was a field project developed to provide needed information on the processes that drive the large-scale monsoon in order to better predict monsoons and their impact on human life. There are two distinct monsoon systems affecting India and Southeast Asia so MONEX was divided into two components: summer and winter. The winter experiment involved two phases of research. The first phase occurred December 1- 31, 1978, and the second phase occurred January 5 to March 5, 1979. The summer monsoon experiment was conducted during May 1st to June 30th 1979 (phase I, focus Arabian Sea side) and 1-27 July 1979 (phase II, focus Bay of Bengal side). MONEX participants included scientists and technicians from Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, China, Singapore, Thailand and the United States. Joachim Kuettner was the U.S. Project Director for MONEX. Related collections include the GATE and GARP records. Show less
