Measuring snowfall is a challenge for weather researchers. The main playing field where snow sensors vie for accuracy under NCAR's watch is the Marshall Field Site, located a few kilometers south of Boulder on a windswept mesa. Along with the S-Pol Doppler radar, the site hosts an array of more than a dozen automated gauges provided by various manufacturers. The gauges each gather snowfall and measure its liquid water equivalent (the amount of melted water it contains). Here Scott Landolt oversees a variety of snow gauges and shields at the Marshall site.
