Leo F. Rettger was born in Huntington, Indiana on March 17, 1874. He graduated from Indiana University (B.A., 1896; M.A., 1897) and Yale University (Ph.D., 1902). Rettger taught at Yale University from 1902-1942, and served as chairman of the Department of Bacteriology from 1928-1931 and 1933-1942. He held the title of professor emeritus from 1942 until his death in New Haven, Connecticut on January 7, 1954.
