Hablot Knight Browne was an English artist, best known as "Phiz," the illustrator of Charles Dickens' works. Born in Lambeth, he was apprenticed to an engraver, but was unsuited to the trade; after winning a prize for a portrait, he bought out his apprenticeship and sought a career as an artist. He met Charles Dickens in 1836, and took over as illustrator of The Pickwick Papers, eventually illustrating ten of Dickens' novels, as well as numerous works by other prominent writers.
