General Oscar F. Long, U.S. Army officer, was born in NY and graduated from West Point in 1876. He saw active service during the Indian Campaigns of 1876-79 and was aide-de-camp to Colonel Nelson A. Miles, then in charge of the Yellowstone Command. Long was appointed general in 1901 and served as general superintendent of the Army Transport Service during the Spanish American War and the Philppine Insurrection. He was married to Amy Requa, daughter of California financier Isaac L. Requa.

Biography

Oscar Fitzalan Long, born in 1852, was appointed to West Point in 1872. Upon graduation he joined the 5th U. S. Infantry. In 1877 he fought under Nelson A. Miles against the Montana Indians -the Sioux, Nez Percé, Cheyenne and Bannock tribes -in the battles of Wolf Mountain, Lame Deer, Bear Paw Mountain and Milk River, and received the Congressional Medal of Honor for his gallantry in action in the battle of Bear Paw Mountain. In 1896 Captain Long was assigned to San Francisco with the Quartermaster Corps. Here he equipped the army sailing to the Philippines, and organized overseas transport service between San Francisco and the Philippines. He was commissioned Captain and Assistant Quartermaster in 1892, Major and Quartermaster in 1901, Lieutenant Colonel in June 1904, and retired as a Brigadier General in July 1904. He made his home in Piedmont, California, after his retirement, and became president of the California Wire Cloth Company of Oakland. He died on Dec. 28, 1928.
