French mathematician, physicist, astronomer and politician. François Arago contributed to major discoveries concerning electromagnetism, light polarisation and velocity, the meridian arc length of the earth, and the standardisation of the metric system. From 1830 he was director of the Paris Observatory. Arago also served several roles in government, including a short period as the prime minister of France.

François Arago (1786-1853) fut admis à l’âge de dix-sept ans à l’École polytechnique. Secrétaire du Bureau des Longitudes, il fut adjoint à Biot, chargé d’achever la mesure de l’arc du méridien terrestre (1806). Membre titulaire de l’Académie des sciences à vingt-trois ans, il fut nommé professeur d’analyse et de géodésie à l’École polytechnique où il exerça ces fonctions pendant vingt ans. Devenu directeur de l’Observatoire, il donna des cours d’astronomie restés célèbres par leur clarté. En 1830, Arago remplaça Fourier comme secrétaire perpétuel de l’Académie pour les sciences mathématiques. Après 1830, il entra à la Chambre comme député des Pyrénées-Orientales et siégea à l’extrême-gauche. En février 1848, Arago fut porté par l’acclamation populaire au Gouvernement provisoire et chargé de diriger les ministères de la Marine et de la Guerre. Il fit adopter l’abolition de l’esclavage dans les colonies françaises. Député à la Constituante, il appartint à la Commission exécutive, qui se démit en juin, puis il siégea à la Législative. En 1852, il ne voulut pas prêter serment au gouvernement nouveau.
